Worlds AIDS Conference 2006

Poster Session Help Desk Volunteer

After 2 trainings - I was thoroughly impressed with the conference management company.

The poster area was the perfect location to be situated as a volunteer as it provided me with opportunities to meet with and discuss the issues being presented by representatives from around the globe.  I was particularly impressed with the popular education section - where local creative ideas in public AIDS/HIV education were displayed.  I have an entire box of examples - it is amazing to see the creativity that abounds in community education around the globe!

I was able to attend the following workshops and wish I had the opportunity to attend the plethora that were available as each workshop brought forth its own lessons for future learning.  I spent the next months going through the documentation provided by all the conference facilitators.

  • How to Participate in the Development of Proposals to the Global Fund
Well this lengthy and informative workshop was by far had the most participation from audience and panel members - I must have taken 10 pages of notes which I am sure will come in handy in the future.
  • Treatment for Injecting Drug Users: Making Calls for Universal Access Real
I was suprized at how the response seemed to be standard across the board and wondered if briningin the speakers together in a forum with users could drive some new approaches.
  • TB & HIV: Overlapping Epidemics, Overlapping Challenges
A topic I had never come across - very informative and frightening to consider.  I have worked with TB patients and HIV patients respectivly but to pair the diseases.  Oh my..
  • Sex Workers are Part of the Solution: Sex Worker Leaders Around the Globe
Sex worker advocates from around the globe were represented on the panel - very inspiring and educational.  The refusal of customers outside of NA to use protection was astounding but the work these orgs were doing to empower SW was insparational.
  • Risk and Risk Reduction for Female Sex Workers
  • Meeting the Nutritional Needs of Adults and Children Living with HIV/AIDS in Resource Limited Settings: From Science to Practice
I found the reasearch presentations astounding - and the need for the international response to pair HIV/AIDS medicines with nutrition supplements should be standard! I must go into my files to follow up on the astounding postive response that patients took to this pairing.  Common sense!
This was my introduction to Paul Farmer of , and Stephen Lewis - outside of reading their books.  I was inspired by their humility and drive.
